If you go to Menu, choose preferences, then appearance, you should be able to click "install themes" in the window that pops up, then you navigate to your tar.gz and use that, no extracting needed. It should come up with a little alert saying the theme was installed without any problems, and you're good to go.

Thanks for the info! I am a new user and trying to figure out the theme myself. I did exactly as you said, but I cannot even see it in the Appearance options. It does not give me a choice for the download. Is there something else I can attempt?

Thank you for your help

It actually gives me a message saying

"An error installing" "Does not seem to be a valid theme"

I am trying to install Xaphire - which is one of the highest rated.

here alternative :
1. unzip tar.gz file you've download.
2. open nautilus or file browser you have
3. on keyboard press Ctrl + H (this action will show-up the hidden file)
4. look into folder /your-home-folder/.themes
5. copy paste unzipped theme file to .themes folder
6 as result go to Menu -> Preferences -> Appearance
7. choose one of theme you just installed

note : sorry for my poor English

How do you install a login theme or select from ones installed in Linux Mint 8? I knew how in 7, but 8 doesn't seem to be the same.
